On 2-3 March XXIII regional competitions among the participants of “Odyssey of Mind”, international programme of creative thinking development and teamwork, will be held on SUSU territory.
The organizers of the event are the Ministry of Education and Science of Chelyabinsk region, Main Department of Youth Policy of Chelyabinsk region, and SUSU.
30 teams from Chelyabinsk, Satka, Bakal, Verkhny Ufaley, Ozyorsk, Snezhinsk, Miass, Kopeysk and Kremenkul will take part in the competition. The contestants are 5-23 years old – from kindergarten to university students.
The teams will demonstrate the stage presentations of kids’ inventions and solving the tasks which have more than one correct solution.
Task 1 – teams will present means of transport, designed and constructed by the participants. These systems use various motor systems which will overcome obstacles and deliver the needed parts to the place of assembly. Then these parts will be used to construct an electronic pet.
Task 2 – teams will present their own way of receiving e-mail by the particular addressee. The teams will show their know-how, network server, spam filter, and will also present a story about wrong address and how a masterpiece has been sent as an attached file.
Task 3 – teams will show special performances, where they will create a copy of a classic architectural structure built in the period of 1000 – 1600 A.D. In the performance there will also be reproduced and presented 3 masterpieces which will “vanish” and two characters who will set out in search of them. Finally, each team will present two songs and a dance created by themselves.
Task 4 – teams will built a construction with balsa and glue (no more than 15 kg) which will be shown in their own ad and then will test it with the help of special device loading it with weights of several hundred kilograms till it is destroyed.
Task 5 – presentation of humorous stories about how the behaviour of certain characters, considered normal in one situation, becomes “weird” in another and the way to measure this very “weirdness”.
Task 6 – the youngest participants, children up to 8 years old, will show a performance about two marine explorers who set off for the underwater world, about ocean research and the discoveries made. They will also explain how the sea waves appear, and will make a “silly discovery” which they will have to keep in secret.
The opening ceremony will be held at 9:30 in the Performance Hall of SUSU main building. The very performances may be seen starting from 10:45 on three stages: SUSU Performance Hall and halls of SUSU Sports Center (Sonya Krivaya St., behind SUSU swimming pool). After the competition the teams will get recommendations for participating in European Festival in Germany and summer camping “I am the inventor”. The winners will get an opportunity to take part in World Final of the programme in the USA.
On March 3 a colourful creativity festival awaits all the participants, fans and spectators. The scientific show prepared by “Pochemuchka Academy” (“Whyer Academy”), competitions for the spectators organized by Intersvyaz company, presentations of interesting projects for future university applicants, best teams’ performances and flash mob will start at 10:00 in SUSU Performance Hall in the main building.
