All-Russian Inter-University Translation Competition at SUSU

This year Foreign Languages Department (E.N. Yaroslavova, Head of Department) became the organizer of the annual inter-university competition in translation among students who study the course “Translator in Sphere of Professional Communication”. Competition of 2013 possesses a status of All-Russian competition and the students from three more universities took part in it: Izhevsk State Technological University, Ural Federal University named after first President of Russia B.N. Yeltsin, Yaroslavl State University named after P.G. Demidov.

The main aim of the competition is to encourage the students to learn foreign language for their future effective professional activity and to detect talented students to train them for participation in All-Russian and international competitions.

Technical capabilities of South Ural State University and active cooperation of Institute of Open and Distance Education personnel helped to intensify the process of results processing after the first and second rounds. The third round of the competition was held in the University building “Sigma” in the format of video conference among the participating universities on the topic “How to achieve success in your life”. The joint team from English Language and Foreign Languages Departments took the second place while the winner of the competition was the team from Ural Federal University.

SUSU team comprised the students who study the course “Translator in Sphere of Professional Communication” from the following Faculties: Journalism, History, Economics and Management, Trade and Economic, Law, Economics and Entrepreneurship and Food Technologies. This program is under a great attention of the University Administration as it allows training the graduates of international level who know a foreign language at the professional level.

Daniil Sukhov, student of Law Faculty, says: “Isn’t it true that this kind of events open new perspectives for the students? I would like to believe that there is no necessity to go abroad if we can create the same conditions over here. A journey of a thousand miles begins with a single step. And this competition means the above mentioned single step; thus it depends on our professors how many steps we are going to have”. We would like to point out the senior professors of the Department O.V. Belkina and L.M. Sergeeva who managed to organize that competition at the high level.
