SUSU Historians Successfully Participated in the International Olympiad in Astana

The I International Olympiad in Archaeology and Ethnography was held on April 21st 2016 in the capital of Kazakhstan. The Gumilev Eurasian National University (Astana) acted as organizer. Nine delegations from various regions, from the Urals to Yakutia, took part in the Olympiad. South Ural State University was represented by the team “League of Archaeological and Ethnographical Research”, which included third-year student historians Georgiy Yantsevich, Evgeniy Yantsevich, and Sofiya Suleymanova.

Participants had to pass six rounds of testing. The first was the team business card, demonstration of their logo, and speaking about their university. The logo and talisman of the SUSU team was a silhouette of the university, to which the main instruments of archaeology, shovels, were added. The second round was a competition where the captains had to answer questions about archaeology and ethnography of the world. The questions had impressive variety. The team was represented in this round by Sofiya Suleymanova who answered a video-question from the rector of the Eurasian National University and scored maximum points.

The third round was a multimedia contest. Participants had to lead a presentation summarizing their field research and talk about the monument that they studied. The “League of archaeological and ethnographical research” team demonstrated the results of their field research of the Kamenniy Ambar-5 burial ground to the jury and to the other participating teams. This field research has been lead for many years by head researcher of the Scientific Center for Eurasian Research, doctor of history, Andrey Vladimirovich Epimakhov. The subsequent rounds were held simultaneously and included subject tests in archeology and ethnography and a popular-science essay on a given topic. SUSU students showed good results and earned leading positions in the individual rankings.

According to the results of all six rounds, the South Ural State University team took second place, passing up the teams of Chelyabinsk State University and the hosts – the Gumilev Eurasian National University, who shared third place.

After the Olympiad there was a sightseeing tour of the city and a coffee break, during which participants of various teams were able to meet each other, exchange interesting information and enjoy pleasant conversation. It is these moments in particular that form the modern international research community. Thanks to such Olympiads and conferences, young, talented researchers can make useful connections and consolidate efforts for the future development and promotion of science. This is not any less important for the formation of future professionals.
