“Philosophy and Theatre”: A Play based on F.M. Dostoevsky’s Novel

The Department of Philosophy of the Institute of Social Sciences and Humanities in collaboration with the Municipal Autonomous Institution “The New Arts Theatre” (NAT) is implementing a new project “Philosophy and Theatre” in the framework of a strategic research area of the Department “Philosophical Practice”.

The Theatre Night at the New Arts Theatre was held on April 29. The event started at 17.00 and went on until the midnight. Over 70 students accompanied by lecturers of the Department of Philosophy U.V. Sidrova and V.A. Klenovskaya watched an incredibly comprehensive play “Demons” (stage performances in three parts) based on F.M. Dostoevsky’s work. The stage director and creative director of the New Arts Theatre is E. Gelfond.

The point of the play is immersion in the artistic and intellectual world of Dostoevsky, which is achieved due to the experimental form of a play and intimacy. The play’s peculiar feature is that a part of performance is conducted in the auditorium. Such form of philosophical practice, a combination of the play and careful thought, made a deep impression upon students and adults.

It is noteworthy that within the framework of the project it has been the second visit to a theatre. Before that the associate professor of the Department of Philosophy Reshchikova S.P. visited the play “Demons” with her students. The students wrote many interesting reviews, where they tried to reveal the main philosophical ides of the play. The contest of these reviews was organized. The best works were posted in the NAT VK public, some works earned prizes (free tickets to other plays).

It’s planned to organize a roundtable discussion with directors and actors, where participants can share their impressions and ideas. Students and academic instructors are invited to this meeting.
