From a 3D Model to the Newest Crane Cabin: Innovative Developments of a SUSU Laboratory

Today close cooperation with large Russian manufacturing companies plays a valuable role in the development of science. One example of successful cooperation is the Laboratory of Electronic Control Systems Covers Design within the Public Research Institute Test Mechanical Engineering of South Ural State University. The laboratory works successfully within one of the partner businesses in Chelyabinsk’s Metallurgic region and helps solve important industrial tasks. The laboratory is led by Danis Mukhamadeev.

“The main task of the Laboratory of Electronic Control Systems Covers Design is training highly qualified specialists in mechanical engineering. Students of the SUSU Polytechnic Institute have the wonderful opportunity to obtain the knowledge and skills that modern engineers need. They can see laser technologies in action first-hand. The students, master’s students, and doctoral students at SUSU completing laboratory work, final projects, dissertations, and other projects, have access to the laboratory’s technologies and materials to search for engineering solutions,” says director of the Public Research Institute Test Mechanical Engineering Ramil Zakirov.

The laboratory’s equipment allows them to develop sheet material from various steels, complete laser cutting and bending, and prepare welded metal constructions for various purposes. The range of application for them is very wide: from electrical cabinets and mobile pump units to the control panels of cranes.

“The obtained welded structures go through the application of a polymer powder coating. For this, parallel to the line of metal processing there is a line of chambers in which the construction is blasted by steel grit,” explains Ramil Agzamovich, “After degreasing with phosphating solutions, powder is applied by hand in the powder chamber using equipment from the company GEMA (Switzerland). Then the powder is sintered and we receive a product with a polymer powder coating. This coating compares favorably from paint coatings by their strength and durability.”

The dimensions of all of the chambers allow the laboratory to prepare various large sheet-metal constructions. These chambers are unique for Chelyabinsk – the majority of business use garage technologies which are significantly weaker in their treatment quality. A particular feature of the Laboratory of Electronic Control Systems Covers Design is their full cycle preparation of covers. The process begins with sheet metal and ends with a fully equipped cabin with windows, electrical equipment, and all of the necessary components.

“Around 30 cabins are created for cranes for the Chelabyinsk Mechanical Factory a month as import substitution for Chinese cabins. In addition, Svechel AO and SUSU create cabins for the Liebherr company (Nizhniy Novgorod) for tower cranes. South Ural State University does not just offer equipment but also completes design, research, and construction,” continues the director of Public Research Institute Test Mechanical Engineering.

Typically, cabins are created for concrete clients who have their requirements for size and design. An individual project is designed for them. Staff of the Laboratory of Mechanical Engineering design various cabins for the Liteyno-mechanicheskiy Zavod (Foundry and Mechanical Factory, Nyazepetrovsk), the company Liebherr, the company group ROKRA, and others. Parallel with this is design of cabins for installation in Chelaybinsk businesses.

Staff of the laboratory actively use innovations and work on the creation of breakthrough technologies with leading researchers from South Ural State Unviersity. They complete the scientific development of 3D models and models for the cabin control of technical and lifting equipment and cabins for the EG-04 excavator.

In the near future, the laboratory wants to continue working with leading manufacturing companies in Russia and expand the material and technical base. They also want to continue their research according to the plan for executing steps of the innovative academic program “Energy and Resource-saving Technologies.”
