Lectures by Professor Radu Prodan held at the School of Electrical Engineering and Computer Science

 

Professor of the University of Innsbruck, Radu Prodan, visited South Ural State University from September 18th through 21st. The professor held lectures on the topic “Modeling and optimizations of applications using distributed calculation systems”, where he presented his scientific interests.

Radu Prodan is a professor working in the field of distributed computing systems at the University of Innsbruck (Austria). Professor Prodan has more than 20 years of research experience in programming, compiler, scheduling, and optimization for parallel and distributed systems. The magazine IEEE Transactions on Cloud Computing rated him as one of the most productive researchers around the world in the field of cloud technologies.

At his lectures at SUSU, Radu Prodan talked about the main areas of research that are completed under his guidance. For example, his team is developing the platform Askalon, which is focused on managing computational processes for composite applications using distributed computing architecture. Examples of the use of this platform include tasks related to computer modeling in such fields as astrophysics, molecular dynamics, weather forecasting, and more.

Professor Prodan described in detail the architectures of applications under development and their relevance in various fields. For example, the project entitled RainCloud Workflow is dedicated to forecasting information about avalanches, floods, and landslides in the Alpine region. The information that researchers obtain is passed along twice each day (or per an organization’s request) to the Avalanche Warning Service Tirol, which helps to quickly inform and evacuate people from dangerous areas.

The visit by professor Prodan is the continuation of partnership between South Ural State University’s School of Electrical Engineering and Computer Science and the Institute of Computer Science at the University of Innsbruck. Professor Prodan participated in a lecture at the SEECS on cloud computing and technologies for processing big data, in which the school’s students, postgraduates, and researchers offered presentations in English. At the end of the semester, it was decided to develop joint research on the application of cloud technology to solve tasks for database mining in the industrial Internet of things.
