“Metrology Will Change Life”: Conference on the Latest Achievements in Measurement Closes at SUSU

The world’s leading metrologists and the scientists of SUSU, one of the major Russian universities, delivered their presentations on the status and prospects of global metrology, shared their experience, discussed new approaches and future joint projects on implementing modern methods and algorithms of measurement information processing.

The main event of the second day of the conference became the presentation by a specialist on flowmeters, Oxford University Professor Manus Patrick Henry (Great Britain). The famous researcher delivered his presentation on the “Measurement Validation for the Internet of Things”.

The keynote of his presentation was the issue on verification of data obtained by measurement. According to Professor Henry, the search for the ways of verifying of information is one of the most topical issues in today’s metrology.

Also, in his presentation the scientist told about a new signal processing technology developed in Oxford.

“Metrology will change our lives in the nearest future. The more sensors are used in industry, the smaller will be our designing experience in engineering new devices. Nevertheless, we will have to somehow make sure that our measurements are accurate, and that failure detection is in process. New methods are required to solve this problem. And the Prism signal processing technology which we have developed is one of the possible solutions to this problem,” stresses Manus Patrick Henry.

Right after the scientist’s presentation discussion sections were held. The first section was devoted to “Technical Diagnostics and Metrological Self-Monitoring of Measuring Instruments and Actuation Devices”. Within the framework of this scientific discussion the speakers suggested their variants and methods of diagnostics for various tasks, and explained and illustrated the operational principles of these methods by examples.

At the second section new measurement technologies in industry were discussed by the participants. Representatives of the industrial sector took part in this discussion and with interest welcomed the ideas suggested by the scientists.

At the third section the issue of dynamic measurement was discussed. One of the most outstanding presentations of this section was delivered by the Director of the SUSU Institute of Natural Sciences, Doctor of Sciences (Physics and Mathematics), Professor Alevtina Keller.

“Jointly with postgraduate Andrey Ebel we presented a new result in optimal dynamic measurement,” shares Alevtina Viktorovna. “This field is a result of cooperation of two scientific schools of our University – of the engineering school of Alexander Shestakov and the mathematical school of Georgy Sviridyuk. Namely thanks to this collaboration a new field in dynamic measurement was born at SUSU. Tasks on restoring dynamically corrupted signals by the methods of optimal control theory are being solved, numerical methods are being developed which allow to speed up solutions. In particular this presentation touched upon one of the new numerical methods aimed at reducing a task’s calculating time,” notes Alevtina Keller.

The total of more than 70 research papers have been presented over the two conference days. All of these will be published as collected papers (full articles) in the IEEE Xplore digital library. The publication is indexed at Scopus scientometric database.

Giving the summary of the conference on metrology the SUSU Rector Alexander Shestakov highly appreciated the participation of the world class scientists and noted that this conference also resulted in multiple joint projects with foreign countries which would be fulfilled in the nearest future.

“Besides an outstanding presentation by Manus Patrick Henry, I would like to mention the plenary presentation devoted to measurement in humanities, as well as the topical round table that followed. Information that we learned helped us understand new technologies of assessment and measurement of humanities’ values. In the near future relevant interdisciplinary studies based on this data will be organized at SUSU – a workshop will be held, and a working group will be created. I am sure that elaboration of this field will result in development of many humanities’ fields at our University,” says Alexander Shestakov.

The SUSU Rector also stressed that the conference results will allow to expand the possibilities of integration of our country’s economy into the global economy due to interaction of the advanced Russian and international experiences and their application in metrological activity.
