“SUSU Fostered in Me the Sense of Responsibility”: Graduate Alexey Uskov

 

December 1 is the 60th anniversary from the foundation day of the Instrumentation Engineering Faculty. Nowadays its successor is the SUSU School of Electrical Engineering and Computer Science. Today the School of Electrical Engineering and Computer Science includes 10 departments which perform training of bachelors, specialists, masters and postgraduates in the fields of instrument engineering and automated control, radio electronics and computer science.

Director of South Ural State University’s Research and Development Center of Industrial Automation, Alexey Uskov, is a graduate of the Instrumentation Engineering Faculty’s Department of Radio and Technical Systems.

Alexey Yuryevich told us about his studying at SUSU and why he decided to establish a research and development center.

– How conscious was your choice of your future specialty after graduating high school?

– Choosing the specialty was quite easy for me. I set the goal right away – to get enrolled to the SUSU Instrumentation Engineering Faculty. First of all, the sphere of electronics and programming has always been of great interest to me. This was as well caused by the fact that I studies in a lyceum with advanced studying of physics and mathematics. Secondly, my parents in their time also obtained higher engineering education at SUSU. So I decided to follow their steps, because by the example of my parents I saw what high results in professional activity one can achieve having a quality engineering education. When choosing from engineering specialties, I preferred Radio Electronic Systems. This specialty has always been very popular, and nowadays digital circuit engineering is actively developing. I decided that it would be a prospective area and I was right. Having successfully finished studying at the Instrumentation Engineering Faculty, I got the desire to extend my knowledge in the sphere of finance and management, and in 2008 I once again got enrolled to SUSU, but this time to the Faculty of Economics and Entrepreneurship, on the specialty of Corporate Management for extramural studies. Obtaining of the second higher education significantly enhanced the level of my competencies, broadened up my mind and, as a result, allowed to get an executive position at one of the leading industrial enterprises of the instrumentation engineering branches of our region – the Energia Istochnik (Energy Source) OOO. Further on, not stopping on the achieved results, I finished postgraduate studies at SUSU in the sphere of Electric Engineering Complexes and Systems, and at the moment I am getting ready to defend my dissertation for Candidacy of Engineering Sciences.

– Do you recall your student years with a light heart?

– In my opinion, if a person made a conscious choice of the sphere of his further professional activity and specialty, he has got a goal – to get new knowledge and skills. In this case, studying at the Instrumentation Engineering Faculty will be interesting and quite easy. During the initial years of study I did have some difficulties caused by transition from high school education model to studying at the university but it happens with everyone. In general, we had a great group – a consolidated team of students in which I was the prefect. We have always supported and helped each other, and we still keep in touch; there are many group mates with whom we are now working on collaborative projects in the sphere of instrument engineering. So I recall my student years with joy, and sometimes with sadness because they had passed so quickly.

– What was the topic of your graduation qualification work?

– The topic of my thesis was development of computer-aided stand for adjusting measuring transducers. Development of this stand was intended for enhancing produce-ability of industrial temperature sensors in which digital measuring transducers are used. This issue is especially relevant for AO PG Metran, which is one of the leaders in the sphere of instrumentation engineering and manufacturing of temperature sensors. I obtained an excellent grade for defending my thesis and graduated with distinction.

– How did your career start?

– During the third year of study, I undertook an internship at the AO PG Metran Company, and during the 5thyear I started working full time at the Energia Istochnik OOO which is one of manufacturers and suppliers of industrial electronics for AO PG Metran. As of today, I am the senior constructor of this enterprise. Nevertheless, the strive to science, to creating new technologies overcame, and at the end of 2016 I decided to return to SUSU to organize a scientific branch in the sphere of industrial automation with my team of highly trained specialists.

This is how we decided to establish the Research and Development Center of Industrial Automation. Our Center performs developing and launching into serial production the automated systems for controlling technological processes of the new generation. Everything that is released on the market nowadays has become standardized, and generally speaking, we don’t see any new breakthrough technologies which would greatly exceed power efficiency or the level of automation of technological processes.

Therefore, we aspire to organize some transfer of technologies from science into industry. SUSU has a very wide-ranged scientific and engineering potential, qualitative research base and advanced decisions which unfortunately are not yet implemented in industry. In order to promote this soon-to-come implementation, we created our Center.

– What would you like to wish to the Instrumentation Engineering Faculty?

– I would like to congratulate the SUSU School of Electrical Engineering and Computer Science with this remarkable date. Being a graduate of the Instrumentation Engineering Faculty, I can proudly say that I received a huge knowledge background which I keep broadening and improve, and that studying at SUSU fostered in me the sense of responsibility and skills of efficient time-management. I express my deep gratitude to lecturers who gave us fundamental knowledge. I would like to wish them hard-working students who aspire to reaching high professional results, and I wish students to absorb the priceless experience that lecturers are sharing, and use every possibility provided by our university for self-realization: taking part in contests and grants, internships, joint projects with leading enterprises of the region and the country! I wishyou further prosperity!
