SUSU and Universities of Cuba Collaborate in Geoinformatics

Scientists from South Ural State University will organize a seminar on geoinformatics (informatics in the fields of geography, cartography and geological sciences) in the Cuban Province of Guantanamo (south-east), the event’s Organization Committeey.

“This conference will be held within the framework of the International Congress of Universities 2018 sponsored by the Russian-Iberoameriacn Center, which represents SUSU interests in the countries of Latin America and the Carribean,” the Center representative Berenice Servantes tells.

This seminar, among the participants of which will be Doctors of Sciences Valentina Maksimova, Maksim Zhitrin, and Anzhar Abdullaev, will be held on February 10th. Namely this event will touch upon the role of geoinformational technologies in managing land resources, infrastructure of spatial data in global positioning and forecasting systems, and others.

Moreover, Director of the Russian-Iberoameriacn International Center of RSSU signed a collaboration agreement with the University of Guantanamo. This collaboration started in September, when Alberto Turro, Rector of the University of Guantanamo, came to Chelyabinsk to visit SUSU Rector Alexander Shestakov.

“Our Center provides SUSU with an opportunity to expand its academic and scientific collaboration with the countries of Latin America and the Carribean. This kind of collaboration is happening for the first time,” comments Servantes.

Geoinformatics is a field of sciences which combines sciences on Earth and information technologies. It emerged in 1972 when the USA National Aeronautics and Space Administration (NASA) launched its first civilian satellite.

Ever since then geoinformatics has been facilitating improvement of planning the use of lands of settlements, production systems evaluation, and environment monitoring.

The 11th International Congress of Universities 2018 will be held in the Palace of Conventions in Havana, February 12th through 16th. The organizers see it as a venue for meeting, holding a dialogue and analyzing the most topical issues in the field of geoinformatics.
