SUSU Students will Begin Studying Lean Production in the New Academic Year

In September, a unique-for-Chelyabinsk Laboratory of Simulation Learning entitled “Efficient Production” is planned to be opened on the grounds of South Ural State University’s School of Economics and Management. In the course of classes, students will master in practice the fundamentals of “lean production” concept in business management, which nowadays is the world’s mainstream of management.

“The Laboratory will be principally distinct from the others. Knowledge there will be obtained through practical training,” says Director of SUSU’s School of Economics and Management, Irina Savelyeva. “For example, a team will be given a task to assemble a fuel pump within a certain period of time, and then after having analyzed mistakes, the team will propose a new variant for organizing the manufacturing process which will allow reducing the time for completing the task. Thus, we introduce theory through practice, extend variants for solving problems, and reduce the time of studying. And that's how we teach students the principles of organizing the lean production technology at enterprises and companies. Not only students majoring in economics and management but also students majoring in engineering specialties will be able to undertake training at the Laboratory. Moreover, representatives of the Chelyabinsk region’s enterprises and students from other universities are welcome as well.”

The SUSU School of Economics and Management (SEM) focuses a lot of attention on practice-oriented education. At the present time, joint projects are being carried out with SUSU’s industrial partners: the Plastmass Plant and Elektromashina NPO. Inter-department teams of students which perform development of project initiatives for these enterprises under supervision of teaching staff have been formed. The teams include the future marketing specialists, programmers, managers, logistics specialists, and accountants. As the result of their work, the unified team forms a project which is to be presented for top-managers of the Plant. This project is mutually beneficial: students get real work experience and prospects for employment, and the Plant receives the finished project and the best cadres.

Another advantage of the SEM is elite education of students, implemented in two areas.

“For Economic specialty (specialization of “Business Economics”) our partner is the Avoir Group Company. Its owner, the former Vice-Governor of the Chelyabinsk region, Aleksei Ovakimyan, is our graduate. Together with the SUSU Department of Accounting, Analysis and Audit the Company created a laboratory where roundtable discussions, master classes and practicum sessions are held. Specialists of the Avoir Company personally teach exclusive disciplines to students. For Management specialty (specialization of “Risk Management”) our partner company is the Chelyabinsk branch of Sberbank of Russia. There, students regularly undertake internships; together with the bank’s specialists develop projects for its development; take part in the program entitled “Learning by Practicing”.

What is important, the partner companies are bearing the responsibilities for assisting in employment of their mentee students. Both the Avoir Company Group and Sberbank PAO readily recruit our alumni!” noted Irina Savelyeva.

There is free business school operating at the SUSU School of Economics and Management for students and alumni where lectures are held by well-known business coaches from Moscow, Saint Petersburg, and Yekaterinburg. There is a possibility to obtain additional education in the sphere of economics, finance, management, etc. After completion of training, a certificate which will allow forming a portfolio and get an additional advantage for employment is given.

“SUSU School of Economics and Management’s Master’s degree programs in such fields of study as Economics and Management are especially popular not only among Russian students but also for international students whose training is performed in English language,” notes Director of SEM, Irina Savelyeva. “Among popular specialties are: Strategic and Innovative Marketing, and Commerce at the Foreign Market of Goods and Services. In the future, we are planning to launch educational programs taught in English for Bachelor’s degree students as well, which will allow ensuring further integration into the international education environment.”

Zhang Zhijian (student from China):

“I obtained Bachelor’s diploma of SUSU’s School of Economics and Management, and now I’m studying for obtaining Master’s degree. SUSU has a very good reputation in China, therefore I had chosen this university. I think that teachers here have personal approach to each student, and lecturers always thoroughly and willingly answer any questions. I haven’t decided yet whether I’m going to continue my career in China or stay in Russia, but what I know is that the obtained education will help me.”

Moreover, SUSU has academic mobility program with Zhejiang Ocean University. SEM carries out student exchange in such Bachelor’s programs as Finance and Credit; Accounting, Analysis and Audit; Management. Nowadays a group of 14 SUSU students is studying in China whereas Chinese students came to the South Ural to study as exchange students.

We should mention cadre potential of the SEM. Senior lecturers are acting as experts in various committees of executive and legislative authoritative bodies of the Chelyabinsk region. The work of team of SEM scientists in the course of developing the analytic block for Strategy of social and economic development of the region until 2035 was highly praised. The Department of Accounting, Analysis and Audit became the winner of the contest organized by the Vladimir Potanin Foundation and obtained grant for developing a education course in the discipline of Accounting and Analysis according to IFRS with the Use of Russian Chart of Accounts. The university’s Department is the only one in  Russia, whose specialists were invited to the team of developers of new federal accounting standards of the Russian Federation.

SUSU is one of the largest universities in Russia which holds high positions in international rankings. According to Webometrics Ranking of World Universities, in 2017 SUSU improved its positions for 213 points, especially in such indicators as “openness” and “excellence”. Moreover, the university improved its ranking in QS University Rankings: Eastern Europe and Central Asia (EECA). In 2017, the university climbed up from the 573rd to the 414th place in the world’ ranking, and from the 37th to the 12th place in RankPro Authoritative international ranking among Russian universities.
