SUSU Team – Winners of the 14th International Student Olympiad on Theoretical Mechanics

The 14th International Student Olympiad on Theoretical Mechanics was held at Belarusian State University of Transport in Gomel on April 9th-12th. 140 students participated in the Olympiad – the best representatives of 32 universities from Belarus, Poland, Russia, Ukraine, China, and Turkmenistan.

Our university sent a combined team which included: Pavel Lukinykh (АС-434), Ivan Vaganov (П-323), Viktor Ponomarev (ЕТ-311), Amir Urumbaev (АС-345), Aleksey Antipin (АС-276), Aleksey Leonov (П-225), and Bogdan Pogorelov (КЭ-214). The team consists of students of the Faculty of Aerospace Engineering of the Polytechnic Institute; the Institute of Architecture and Construction; and the Faculty of Mathematics, Mechanics and Computer Sciences, and the Faculty of Computer Technologies, Control and Radio Engineering of the School of Electrical Engineering and Computer Science.

In the Olympiad’s theoretical round the participants were given eight difficult tasks on all sections of Theoretical Mechanics: Statics, Kinematics, and Dynamics, on solving of which they were concentrated for four hours. The full solution for each task was scored 10 points.

The competent jury, members of which included teaching staff of the organizing university and all supervisors of the participating teams, having thoroughly examined the works and appeals, published the results of the individual and team scores under the main competition. The first team prize was awarded to the team of MIPT – Moscow Institute of Physics and Technology. Competition was the strongest for the second and the third prizes. Our team earned 127 points and was awarded the third place certificate.

Under individual competitions, Ivan Vaganov, Viktor Ponomarev, and Aleksey Antipin earned bronze medals and third place certificates. Pavel Lukinykh, Amir Urumbaev, Aleksey Leonov, and Bogdan Pogorelov showed high results taking the 18th, 20th, 21st, and 26th places from among 140 participants.

In this academic year our team also took the fourth place in Russia, the second place among the Russian Federation National Research Universities, and Pavel Lukinykh was awarded the first place certificate at the Russian Olympiad.

At this prestigious contest, SUSU students were good at solving the tasks and showed their high level of Theoretical Mechanics knowledge as compared to the representatives of many other universities.

The SUSU team was trained by Associate Professors of the Department of Technical Mechanics Yuri Pryadko and Svetlana Slepova.
