SUSU Performs Elite Training of Law Students

South Ural State University has been training highly qualified specialists in the sphere of jurisprudence for 25 years already. Nowadays the Institute of Law has 8 departments. The institute has a strong material and technical base which allows performing the training of students at a high level: it includes Criminal Laboratory, Forensic Laboratory, Expert Technologies REC, and Legal Clinic.

Among key advantages of the Institute of Law is HIGH LAW SCHOOL elite education for university applicants with high Uniform State Examination grades.

“There has already been two series of admissions to groups of elite student education where young people are studying 36 hours a week and not 27. The know-how is in the fact that future lawyers are obtaining not just profile-oriented but a universal training by conducting advanced studying of state legal regulation problems, civil-and-legal as well as criminal-and-legal spheres. In fact, after the graduation students will be prepared for working in law-enforcement authorities and judicial authorities as well as in governmental entities and local government bodies and in business. No matter if a student is studying on the basis of state-funded scholarship or by a contract, training of foreign language is conducted free of charge (6 hours per week),” Irina Belyaeva, Deputy Director of SUSU’s Institute of Law, said about features of studying in elite education groups.

As it is planned, graduates from elite education groups will receive an interpreter’s diploma together with a diploma on higher legal education. In the course of elite education, a lot of attention is paid to research activity and practice-oriented training. Together with Kovalev, Ryazantsev and Partners Law Bureau, the Institute of Law organized the Practical Jurisprudence Club in order to form professional competencies of students.

“Twice a month, practicing lawyers of the Bureau conduct interactive classes on acquiring professional skills with second-year students. The most exemplary class is a simulation of a court session, when students preliminarily are given factual allegations; when they are getting prepared, consulting with their mentors, and then the court session gets simulated in our study court room,” says Irina Mikhailovna. “For students this is a very interesting and efficient process of mastering theory through practice.”

At the present time, the Institute of Law signed more than 100 agreements on cooperation with potential employers of alumni. Among the employers are: Arbitration Court of the Chelyabinsk region, Ministry of Justice of the Chelyabinsk region, Public Prosecution Office of the Chelyabinsk region, Chelyabinsk Regional Court, Russian MIA General Department for the Chelyabinsk region, Advocates’ Chamber of the Chelyabinsk region, YUZHURAL-ASKO Insurance Company, etc.

Another project which is in demand among the population of Chelyabinsk and which got upgraded in the last year’s autumn is the Legal Clinic. The counseling body for providing free legal aid has existed at the university since 1999. As of today, the SUSU Clinic signed agreements on cooperation with Chelyabinsk regional department of the Association of Russian Lawyers, with the Center for Development of Legal Clinics Autonomous Non-profit Organization (which unites more than100 legal clinics all around Russia), and with Advocates’ Chamber of the Chelyabinsk region. Legal Clinic performs its activity in a close cooperation with the Directorate of the Ministry of Justice of the Russian federation for the Chelyabinsk region, and with General Department of Justice for the Chelyabinsk region.

“What we try to achieve is that counseling in the Legal Clinic was an achievement for students of senior years of study. Young people here are provided with necessary software, they have access to such legal databases as Garant and Konsultant. Nowadays Chelyabinsk residents can get legal support by two addresses: 78B Lenina prospect and 47-a Elektrostalskaya street (at the Metallurgical District). Students from the 2nd to the 4th years of study have the opportunity to undertake internships at the Clinic, but the majority of them want to get there for forming their own skills of practical activity. Starting from 2019, we are planning to conduct educational courses at the Clinic featuring psychologists and practicing specialists for students who want to become the Clinic’s consultants. Only best candidates will be admitted for work after completion of the courses,” explains Irina Belyaeva.

During the entire academic year, the Legal School works on Sundays for the Chelyabinsk region’s school students of the 8th-9th grades, where lecturers of the Institute read lectures and hold practice-oriented classes on the right issues.

One of the priorities of the Institute of Law’s development is successful international cooperation implemented in various formats: starting with participation in international conferences (“Topical issues of the right in Russia and the CIS countries”, “Modern problems of legal science”, etc.) and finishing with conducting joint research. Among constant international partners of SUSU are: Faculty of Law of the Francisk Skorina Gomel State University (Belarus), National Center of Legislation under the President of the Republic of Tajikistan (Tajikistan), Almaty Academy of the Ministry of Internal Affairs of the Republic of Kazakhstan named after M. Esbulatov (Kazakhstan), University of Belgrade (Serbia) and many others.

As of today, the Institute provides all without exception levels of higher legal education from bachelor’s degree studies till postgraduate studies. After two years of study, students studying in the specialty of Jurisprudence on the bachelor’s degree program can make a conscious choice of their major and complete the advanced study of their future profession; and in the future they can improve their knowledge, skills and abilities by completing an appropriate master’s degree program.

“In 2018, we will continue students’ admission to the exclusive specialty of Forensic Enquiry. Only SUSU performs training in this specialty all around the Ural Federal District. Our first experts graduated in 2016, and today we understand that alumni are in demand, and the quality of obtained education allows them to confidently build up their professional career,” says Director of the SUSU Institute of Law, Aleksandr Klassen.

Unique nature of forensic specialists’ training in the specialty of Forensic Enquiry of Substances, Materials and Products is in the possibility to use SUSU’s material background which allows mastering all private investigation methods used in world-class expertises: microscopic, spectroscopic, chromatographic and x-ray methods of analyzing materials and substances.

The university made an important decision to award additional points to students applying for master’s degree students and who are potential expectants for state-funded education on the basis of their achievements acquired at the previous level of higher education; total addition of up to 20 points is possible. These measures will help providing a high level of basis legal education and satisfy the needs of those applicants who want to combine studying with working.
