This University Unites Europe and Asia - International Graduate on South Ural State University

Even thousands of miles away from Russia, one can meet people inspired by the Russian culture, such as Uvindu Vidura Wijeweera from Sri-Lanka. He has received degrees in jurisprudence, political science, and human resource management, the knowledge-is-power incarnate. As an avid fan of the Russian literature, Uvindu could not stay indifferent when he heard about the opportunity to study at South Ural State University, and he applied to a master’s program. The University has shown Uvindu a multicultural world, just the right one to learn essential life lessons.

– How did you learn about SUSU?

Sri-Lanka is a devoted fan of the Russian literature and Soviet movies. We have a lot of Russian cultural centres in the country where people get together and enjoy the Russian classics. I was a member of such cultural centre, and then I started my Russian Culture Club and organised weekly literary nights. We discussed Pushkin, Gogol, and Tolstoy and watched Soviet films such as The Dawns Here Are Quiet. Professor Shestakov, Rector of South Ural State University, visited our Club one day and he told us about the University. I felt it might be an exciting experience to get a degree in Russia and I decided to apply to SUSU. I’m happy to have made that decision. SUSU gives a fantastic opportunity to meet people from different cultures, thanks to its unique location. It’s a University that unites Europe and Asia.

– Why did you choose political science?

I’ve always wanted to help people, and my first aspiration was to become a doctor. But then I looked at my father, he is a politician in our country, and he does a lot of good things. I’ve decided to follow his path. When I come back to Sri-Lanka, I’ll become a diplomat and help my country build a better political future while also building bridges between Sri-Lanka and Russia.

– Tell about your studies at South Ural State University

Before I applied to a Master’s program, I’d finished a foundation year at SUSU. I was used to teachers talking Russian slowly. When I started my Master’s studies, I faced the real Russian. My whole group was Russian students, and the teachers spoke Russian as usual. At first, it was challenging and, I had to record every lecture. Political science is a complicated field of study with lots of funny words. I was lucky to have great people around me, teachers and classmates, who were friendly and helpful. Thanks to them, I didn’t fall behind and soon mastered my studies. Studying at SUSU was a rewarding experience.

I’d also like to note the Association of International Students. This team has gifted me a lot of friends from all over the world. We’ve become a big family. Thanks to the Association, I’ve learned about other cultures and religions, and now I know how to understand others. As an undergraduate in political science, I know for sure that many of the world’s problems arise from the misunderstanding. SUSU is a place where you can learn how to better communicate with other people without losing your own identity. Such a multicultural environment is a priceless experience for those who want to do international relations and those who want to become better listeners.

Currently, I’m finishing the development of a mobile app for learning the Russian grammar and vocabulary. The app is in Sinhalese, and I’m in the process of patenting it. I’m planning to translate this application into Hindi, Urdu, English, and Chinese. I hope this mobile app will help future SUSU students in learning Russian quickly.

– Did you like the Urals nature?

Yes, the Southern Ural is beautiful. I’ve been to a lot of places within the region, including breathtaking lakes and mountains.

– Would advice would you give to future SUSU students?

The Association of International Students does their best to entertain international students. They regularly hold cultural festivals and celebrations, so that everyone feels at home. I invite everyone to experience SUSU. Gain extensive knowledge, enjoy the beauty of local nature, and become part of a big international family of South Ural State University, the one we call home!
