Metal Cup-2018 All-Russian Championship Finale is to Take Place at SUSU

On October 1st through 4th, final round of All-Russian championship on technology strategy in metallurgy called Metal Cup-2018 is to be held at South Ural State University. During the year, championship stages were held in all Russian universities, where the best teams consisting of 3-5 members had been selected. Winning teams from 15 universities of Russia are going to arrive to South Ural State University to compete in the finale.

“‘Metal Cup-2018’ is a chance to feel like a top manager who needs to make a decision in a situation controversial for the enterprise. In particular, participants are going to complete a task for the Chelyabinsk Pipe-Rolling Plant (ChTPZ). This plant is actively developing the philosophy of ‘white metallurgy’, so the assignment of the participants will be to elaborate a new white metallurgical manufacturing within the Vysota-239 shop floor,” says Deputy Dean of the Faculty of Material Science and Metallurgical Technology of the SUSU Institute of Engineering and Technology, Ivan Ilyin.

In a team, students themselves choose the role that they are going to play. Among mandatory roles are: captain, originator, coordinator, designer and specialist. Participants receive a case 10 days previously to the finale. Within this period, they need to think through their work and presentation of the case, and present it in the finale to experts of various metallurgical companies.

“Case is a real-life task from the sphere of activity of a company or an entire industry branch. Operating conditions, environment and interrelations are described in a case the way they really are. In order to solve a case, it is necessary to take on the role of the main character (more often a top manager) and offer a plan of actions for the company development,” explains Ivan Ilyin.

On the first day, team captains visit ChTPZ, talk to process directors and engineers, get familiar with production and culture of the Pipe-Rolling Plant. Meanwhile, other team members go on an excursion to Mechel, the Chelyabinsk Metallurgical Plant. Also, all participants have an excursion around SUSU’s research and education centres.

On the second day, a celebratory opening ceremony is to be held in Sigma academic complex, featuring reports of the speakers of RUSMETALCON International Science-to-Practice Conference. After the event, participants will go for a strategic session for finishing their cases.

On the third day, the teams are going to defend their cases in front of experts – representatives of SUSU and the largest metallurgical enterprises. Also within the final day, a Job Fair is to start operating, where students will get introduced to 6 enterprises with which they will be able to get a closer acquaintance as well as submit their CVs.

On the fourth day, results will be summarized and announced. Winners will be awarded valuable prizes from the leading metallurgical enterprises as well as a monetary prize from the Youth Venue of Professional Metallurgists.
