Lecturers from Universities of Belgium and Finland Held an Online Master Class on Fact-Checking at SUSU

Within the 4th International Scientific and Educational Forum called “Communication Leader of the 21st Century”, which is being held at SUSU under support of the European Journalism training Association (EJTA), an online master class on fact-checking was held by lecturers Frederic Moraine from Artesis Plantijn University College(Belgium). The topic of their reports was “International fact-checking technologies”.

Participants of the Forum, students and academics, many of whom speak English, gathered in SUSU’s lecture room. Moderator of the international master class was Candidate of Sciences (Philology), Associate Professor at the SUSU Department of Journalism and Mass Communication, Anna Krasavina.

“International master classes are organised under support of the European Journalism Training Association (EJTA, Belgium). In June of 2018, the university joined EUfactcheck international journalism project,” said Anna Krasavina. “Within the project, it is planned to create a Pan-European platform entitled EUfactcheck.eu for publishing results on fact-checking and introduce the three-stage method of fact-checking, developed by EJTA, which is common for journalism schools in European higher education institutions. Globally, this project will serve to improve the quality of political debates in European mass media and enhance media literacy of citizens.”

During the master classes, Frederic Moraine shared their experience, talked about the tendency of fact-checking technology development, and discussed the importance of international connections for implementation of the project.

“I think, this master class was useful for all journalists, because Frederic Moraine told us about problems of fact-checking and talked about relevance of this concept in the modern media space,” said student of SUSU’s Faculty of Journalism, Marina Gofman. “We also reviewed several assignments in order to learn analyzing material correctly. The speaker taught us that it is necessary to extract markers which can help checking a text and verifying its information. I hope that due to the obtained information we will be able to become highly competent journalists.”
