“Modern Media Space as a Motivator for Society’s Humanization”: Presentation of a Research Monograph

Presentation of a research monograph entitled “Modern Media Space as a Motivator for Society’s Humanization” was held within the 4th International Scientific and Educational Forum called “Communication Leader of the 21st Century” organised at SUSU under support of the European Journalism Training Association (EJTA).

The monograph has been published at SUSU’s Publishing Centre and dedicated to specificity of covering the issues regarding personal socialization in the modern media space. Its authors are the Dean of the Faculty of Journalism, Head of the department of Journalism and Mass Communication, Doctor of Sciences (Philology), Liudmila Shesterkina, and Candidate of Sciences (Philology), Head of the Internet Broadcasting Office at the Marketing and Strategic Communications Department, Olga Vazhenina. The authors paid a special attention to studying social functions of the media as well as principles of social journalism as a basis for developing a paradigm of interaction between the society and a person who needs to be socialized.

“The work is of interdisciplinary nature as it is based on theoretical research of Russian and foreign scientists in the sphere of journalism, philology, sociology, psychology, philosophy, cultural studies, medicine and other sciences concerning personal socialization,” says Liudmila Shesterkina. “This is a very important and serious problem of the modern world, and it has become one of strategic research directions at the Department of Journalism and Mass Communication.”

Scientific novelty of the research is in the fact that in order to carry out further humanistic development of the society, the specificity of covering the issues of personal socialization in the modern media space has been actualized. A scientometric analysis of research publications on the problem of autism was carried out; dynamics of media interest to covering the issues of autism in the context of developing a scientific discourse regarding this problem was considered; key problems were determined and scientific truthful and objective criteria of social adaptation were developed; the leading locuses of the modern media space that cover the problems of personal socialization were described and analyzed.

“We also described social coordinates of TV series in the context of leaders of social functions of television,” said Olga Vazhenina. “We provided a detailed characteristic of new media as the most important tool of humanistic education of the society; we also developed approaches to research of a media text which allow identifying the nature and content of informative messages regarding the problem of autism.”

Theoretical and practical relevance of the research is in the fact that a certain contribution to identifying the role of contemporary media space in the processes of personal socialization and improving the life quality of people with personal and behavioral peculiarities was made in determining connection of this aspect of the problem with traditions of the national social journalism. The conducted whole-sided analysis allows evaluating the specificity of covering this socially important topic overall and the problem of autism in particular in the modern media space.

Specificity of activity of new media which cover the problems of personal socialization in the modern media space was determined in the process of forming a humanistic attitude to people with autistic personal features. And as the modern media space keeps actively develop, demonstrating new forms, formats and genres, the process of its formation as a motivator for society’s humanization, which is described in the monograph, provides outlooks for further research.
