International Grants for SUSU Foreign Language Teachers

The SUSU International Office would like to invite SUSU foreign language teachers to take part in grants.

Grant 03.09.  Fulbright Program for Young English Language Teachers in the USA

The FLTA program lasts 9 months; there is no degree awarded at the end of the program. Within this program young English teachers can improve their teaching mastery, their English teaching skills, and can get better acquainted with American culture and traditions. Grant holders of the Fulbright program will be placed in US colleges and universities to work as teachers or teaching assistants for their native language. The duties of the program participants include teaching the language and culture of their country for up to 20 hours a week. Grand holders must also take at least two classes per semester, one of which must relate to U.S. Studies, and the other – to English as a Foreign Language.

The program begins in August. The participants will have one week of acclimatization in the USA. After this, the grant holders will travel to the colleges and universities assigned to them. After the first semester, FLTA grant holders from all over the world, around 400 people, will gather for a conference in Washington. During the conference, the participants will share the experiences they gained and get to know the best and most efficient foreign language teaching methods of today. After the conference, the grant holders return to their universities and colleges to continue and complete the program.

American universities benefit greatly from the presence of native speakers on their campus since the grant holders will not just teach classes for students, but must also cooperate with locals by organizing conversational language groups, clubs, extracurricular events, and round tables to introduce the students to the culture and traditions of their country.

Direct communication allows teachers and American students to learn more about the culture and traditions of the countries they represent and better understand one another. The program requires grant holders to return to their home country at the end of the program and continue to teach English at a school or university.

Participating in this program makes it possible to improve your knowledge of English and a true understanding of the USA and the spiritual and cultural values of Americans.

The program includes:

  • A monthly stipend;
  • Study at an American university;
  • Limited medical insurance;
  • Transportation to the USA and back, as well as within the USA.

Requirements:

  • Candidates must work as English teachers and be in their final years of education at a higher education institution in an English as a Foreign Language major;
  • Candidates must speak English (ibtTOEFL – 80 points; IELST – 6.0);
  • No age limit;
  • If the participant already has a J-1 visa for the USA, no less than two years should pass from the time they return to their home country;
  • Upon completion of the program, participants must return to their home country for two years;
