About

Nanotechnology Research and Education Centre is the first research institution established at the University in 2007. The Centre continues a wide range of projects and research on nanomaterials as well as other materials and compounds like metals, alloys, ceramics, glass, polymers, construction and composite materials.

Nanotechnology Research and Education Centre includes 6 laboratories:

  1. Thermal, Surface and Dispersion Analysis Laboratory
  2. Electron Microscopy and X-Ray Methods of Analysis Laboratory
  3. Chromatography and Spectroscopy Laboratory
  4. Organoelement Compounds Laboratory
  5. Fine Organic Synthesis Laboratory
  6. Multiscale Modelling of Multicomponent Functional Materials Laboratory

The Nanotechnology Centre utilizes high-tech equipment for materials characterization in a wide variety of tasks.

Our services:

  1. Measurement of surface area and porosity
  2. Fraction analysis of powders, suspensions, and colloid solutions
  3. Surface morphology (form and size of the particles)
  4. Elemental analysis of materials, including element mapping
  5. Elemental analysis of particles (size from 100 nm)
  6. Analysis of the internal structure of the sample (atomic resolution), images with energy dispersive detector
  7. Phase analysis with electron microdiffraction
  8. X-ray powder diffraction analysis (WAX and SAXS):
    – Phase identification of crystalline components
    – Analysis of crystal lattice perfection, including nanomaterials
    – Analysis of nanoparticle size
    – Analysis of cell parameters
  9. Single crystal structure solution
  10. Elemental analysis of solids, including trace impurity analysis
  11. Elemental analysis of solutions
  12. Spectral study of materials in a wide wavelength range (UV, visible, NIR, IR)
  13. Titrimetric analysis of solutions
  14. Thermal expansion analysis from -100 °C to +1200 °C
  15. Dynamic mechanical analysis:
    – Identification of phase transformations in polymers
    – Identification of viscoelastic properties of polymers
  16. Thermal analysis of solids in inert, oxidizing or reducing atmospheres:
    –  Heat of phase transitions
    –  Evolved gas analysis
    – Heat capacity
    – Temperatures of phase transformations
    –  Kinetic analysis of thermal destruction
  17. Viscometry of liquids or paste materials
  18. Pycnometric measurements of density of solids

Facilities


Research

1. Synthesis of nanostructured inorganic materials for industrial purposes

The research team has developed new nanostructured materials that are five times more active than the German and American alternatives. The designed materials enable to develop specialised additives for motor oils, conduct fine organic synthesis for industrial purposes,  and remove persistent organic pollutants.

2. Development of organic photosensitizers for alternative energy

The Nanotechnology Centre has developed new selenium- and sulfur- containing compounds that are organic semiconductors. These compounds can become the key component in a solar power system.

3. Synthesis of biologically active organoelement compounds

The researchers have synthesized over 300 biologically active organoelement compounds and deciphered their structure (the Cambridge Structural Database).

4. Multiscale computer modelling of organic and inorganic functional materials

The Nanotechnology research team has developed a new method of multiscale computer modelling of the weak interaction in organic and inorganic compounds.
