An Innovative Model for Bachelor’s Students English Study is Being Released at SUSU

In the beginning of September, project 8.1.3, Implementation of a System of Deeper Language Training in Bachelor's Programs, started as part of the 5-100 Project (project initiator – Elena Yaroslavova, project curator – Viktor Katochkov, portfolio director – Liudmila Shestakova.)

As part of the project, an innovative educational model for English-language training is being released as a pilot for students of the Higher School of Electronics and Computer Sciences, the power engineering faculty of the Polytechnical Institute, and a series of degree programs for the Higher School of Economics and Management. Thanks to education by this new model, students will master the foreign language according to international standards, present the results of their professional work in English, and independently support and constantly improve their language level.

The goal of the program is for students to achieve a level of English confirmed by the following certificates:

New teaching technologies, progressive teaching practices, and innovative academic materials will be used. The courses will be taught using the newest materials from the publisher Cambridge University Press which successfully execute the ideas of mixed education. Students can receive all materials in the SUSU Scientific Library.

Coordinators of the program completed work training at the National University of Science and Technology "MISIS" where they became well-acquainted with the history of creating an English-language space at Project 5-100 member-universities and studied the principles and methods for realizing mixed education with leading methodologists from the publisher Cambridge University Press. Special attention was paid to techniques of preparing for IELTS. The department organized a constant seminar for professors, Techniques of Mixed Education. Training sessions happen every two weeks.

Education by the innovative models of English-language training will use a level-based approach in which students are separated into courses according to their language mastery level after entrance testing. The levels are determined by the Common European Framework of Reference for Languages (CEFR). This level-based approach creates the most comfortable conditions for language study. Advanced training groups are being planned in which students will study for more net hours and in individual programs. In addition, the course includes longer and more intense study. Students have a change to study English for 8 semesters! A range of disciplines will be taught in English with seminars and lectures by foreign professors. Students showing a high level of English mastery in the fourth semester final exams will have the right to train for and take the IELTS exam for free and receive an international certificate which gives them the possibility to enroll in international universities.
