SUSU Student Takes Second Place in Engineering Skills Competition

March 12th and 13th a competition was held as part of the Praise to Men of Labour! federal project at Nosov Magnitogorsk State Technical University with support from the Ministry of Education and Science of the Chelyabinsk Region. A SUSU student became a prize winner as one of the best participants under the category of the Best Metallurgical Engineer.

The competition projects were defended in two groups: Engineering Art of Young Metallurgists, and Professional Metallurgical Engineers. All of the finalists (9 people) had previously been named winners of the regional rounds of the competition which had been held as an online test.

The competition was limited to two regions of the Ural Federal District: Chelyabinsk and Sverdlovsk regions. The young metallurgists were represented by students from Nosov MSTU, SUSU (NRU), and UMMC Technical University (Verkhnaya Pyshma). The honour of professional metallurgical engineers was defended by representatives from Magnitogorsk Iron & Steel Works, AO EVRAZ-NTMK, OJSC MMK - METIZ, RUKSAL, Nadezhdinski Metallurgical Plant (UMMC-Steel), and Mechel.

The competitors’ projects covered a wide range of issues in metallurgy, from blast furnace production to the production of non-ferrous metals. The members of the expert commission evaluated the competitors’ presentations against such criteria as relevance, novelty of research, project presentation, and the participants’ answers to questions.

At the end of the competition, contestants from the Chelyabinsk Region demonstrated the best level of training in metallurgical production among the students: 1st place – Yekaterina Sokolova (Nosov Magnitogorsk State Technical University), 2nd place – Maksim Gafarov (South Ural State University), and 3rd place – Dmitriy Chetvertkov (Nosov Magnitogorsk State Technical University).

Among the employees of metallurgical companies, the winner and holder of the title of the Best Metallurgical Engineer of the Ural Federal District became also a participant from the Chelyabinsk Region, Olga Belan (OJSC MMK-METIZ), and the second and third places were awarded to guests from the Sverdlovsk Region, Vitaliy Rubtsov (AO EVRAZ-NTMK) and Dmitriy Aleshin (JSC Uralelectromed).

This year, Nosov Magnitogorsk State Technical University also organised a professional education event for school children, at the same time as the competition was held. Children visited the laboratory of a chemical production and took part in a master class on art and jewellery casting. Many of them were introduced to a totally new side of the metallurgical engineering profession, the creative side, and they found it very promising.
