Ecological Monitoring as Strategic Objective of Development of South Ural State University

On April 5, a meeting featuring the Rector Aleksandr Shestakov, Vice-Rector for Research, Aleksandr Diakonov, Head of the Research and Innovation Services, Anton Korzhov, Director of the Business Unit at Emerson LLC (Moscow), Aleksandr Moyev, and Director of Ekohimprobor-Servis (Dubna), Yuriy Novikov, took place at South Ural State University. In the result of this meeting, a roadmap in the sphere of joint implementation of an ecological project entitled “Clean Air” has been elaborated.

The Rector of SUSU, Aleksandr Shestakov, explained that in order to successfully implement objectives intended to improve ecological situation in industrial regions of the Russian Federation, the university for many years has been carting out research in the sphere of simulation and forecast of ecological situation.

“In order to successfully implement the ecological project, the university has formed interdisciplinary research groups consisting of specialists in such spheres as ecology, physics, chemistry, mathematics, measuring equipment, programming, as well as specialist of industrial production. The objectives of these groups are to develop components in the following spheres: monitoring of ecological situation, and forecasting of the air quality. One of the main results of these groups’ work should be a digital model which allows solving managerial problems from the position of measuring the process of production while maintaining profitability of enterprises and minimizing risks of impacting the environment. In order to solve the set objective, we need to develop interaction with leaders in the sphere of development of devices that allow carry out computer-aided monitoring of the atmospheric air. One of such leaders is our strategic partner, the Emerson Corporation,” noted the Rector of SUSU, Aleksandr Shestakov.

Vice-Rector for Research, Aleksandr Diakonov, explained that the component called “Clear Air” is the objective included in the national project entitled “Ecology” and “Digital Economy of the Russian Federation”.

“Research conducted at the university showed the absence of a wholly elaborated physical-and-mathematical model that would allow solving the reverse problem on determining the role of each industrial pollutant in ecological situation in a certain air monitoring point in a residential sector. Our research groups are working to create this digital model, taking into account the impact of various factors which include both the atmospheric parameters and the concurrent factors. Completing such tasks is relevant for the Russian Federation as well as for development of fundamental and applied scientific interdisciplinary research. Presently, similar research works are being conducted both in our country and abroad. The ecological monitoring systems under development should be of module nature and have the possibility to analyze data with the use of cloud technologies and the supercomputer; this competency is well-developed at our university. In order to fulfill the set objective, specialised research and education centres such as Nanotechnology REC and Digital Industry REC have been created at the university,” noted Aleksandr Diakonov.

Director of the Business Unit at Emerson LLC, Aleksandr Moyev, proposed a number of roadmap points on interaction between Emerson and the university:

“Our Company has good competencies in the sphere of development and implementation of devices and computer-aided stations for controlling the parameters of air pollutants, including benzopyrene. Development of the scientific component and interaction with the university allows us completing such tasks as: determining the minimal necessary number of monitoring stations as well as places for their location; big data processing; short-term and long-term forecast of ecological situation,” said Aleksandr Moyev.

Road map provisions formulated in the result of the meeting will allow creating the first centre for monitoring and forecasting the atmospheric air condition at the university.
