SUSU Scientists Participate in Engineering a Device Controlling the Functional Status of Newborns

South Ural State University, jointly with OOO Trade House Rosava, Chelyabinsk, have patented a device controlling the functional status of newborns.

For two years, a team of the university's young scientists (Anastasiya Khafizova,?Alina Khusnutdinova,?Evgeny Bogatyrev), guided by Doctor of Sciences (Engineering) and Professor of the Department of Physical Education and Health of the?Institute of Sport, Tourism and Service?Vladimir Kodkin, have been collaborating with Director of OOO Trade House Rosava?Olga Korshunova?to create modern devices by using a unique technology of non-contact electrocardiogram tracing and materials with in-built intelligence.

One of such devices is an orthopaedic pillow with in-built ECG monitoring. The patented device is intended to control the functional status of a newborn, in particular to trace its electrocardiogram, breathing and brainwaves, to calculate the cardiac rhythm and respiratory rhythm, while keeping the newborn very comfortable.

"Due to the fact that a baby is constantly moving, it is quite a problem to do the electrocardiogram tracing. Our pillow will help to do that: you won't have to adjust electrodes to the baby's little hands, all you need is to make sure that its head touches the pilow," explains Vladimir Kodkin.

The case of such a pillow is made of a special electrically conductive fabric with silver-plated threads. The pillow itself is manufactured at OOO Rosava from a material with in-built intelligence; it adjusts to the shape of a newborn's body, does not resist it, but does not sprawl underneath it either. The newborn feels very comfortable and relaxed.

The scientists from South Ural State University and the OOO Rosava specialists tested the devices in several intensive care units for newborns in Chelyabinsk clinics. The obtained results already allow to speak of high efficiency and high potential of the diagnostic devices of this type. ? ? ? ? ? ? ? ? ? ? ? ? ? ? ? ? ? ? ? ? ? ? ? ? ? ? ? ? ? ? ?

"Taking such pillow as a base, it is possible to engineer a device for monitoring and preventing the sudden death syndrome in a newborn baby in its first year of life, a device that will help automatically assess the status of the cardiac rhythm. We are very interested in this development," gives his comment on the innovation Doctor of Sciences (Medicine), Professor?Pavel Tsyvyan,?who is also head of the Department of Normal Physiology at Ural State Medical University, Head of the Central Scientific-and-Research Laboratory of Ural State Medical University, leading research fellow of Research Institute for Maternity and Infanthood Protection, Yekaterinburg.
