Curling Amateur Team of Chelyabinsk Region Took the 3rd Place in All-Russian Winter Games

Sergey Borodin, Associate Professor of the Department of Applied Economics of the SUSU School of Economics and Management, Master’s degree-seeking student of the Computer and Mathematical Modelling Department, took part in the 1st All-Russian Winter Games among amateur teams in the curling discipline as part of the South Ural Team from the Chelyabinsk Region.

It was the first time when the winter amateur games were held with the support of the Ministry of Sports of the Russian Federation. An amateur athlete does not officially play for national teams of the regions or Russia, his motivation is to support healthy lifestyle and promote curling in Russia.

Curling competitions were held in Izhevsk from February 21 to 26. Mixed teams from Moscow, the Samara Region, Chelyabinsk Region, Yaroslavl Region, the Udmurtian Republic and the Krasnodar Territory took part in the competitions. The mixed team included 4 people: 2 men and 2 women. The South Ural team has a skip (team captain) Sergey Narudinov, lead – Irina Lisovets, second – Sergey Borodin, third – Nadezhda Ziablova.

Within 5 days, the teams played a round-robin tournament, quarterfinals, semi-finals and games for the 1-3 places. In the bronze match, the team from the Chelyabinsk Region beat the team from the Yaroslavl Region.

“I have played curling since 2010, after the World Curling Championship among mixed pairs and seniors was held in Chelyabinsk (I defended my candidate’s thesis in 2012). Curling fascinated me with the fact that it can help to keep fit (though some people do not believe it), make me think (it is called ice chess), and is a team sport. Now we are playing in the Uralskaya Molniya Sports Complex, and I would like to invite everyone,” says Sergey Borodin.

The other day the men curling team of South Ural State University took part in the 6th All-Russian Winter Student Games 2020 in Novosibirsk. The team consisting of Yaroslav Ulman (team skip), Ivan Vorobiev, Konstantin Okruzhnoy and Aleksandr Kuriaev took the 3rd place.
