SUSU Institute of Architecture and Construction Teaches to Build, Design and Create

Do you wish to become a real creator? Do you want to learn to design and build beautiful houses, theatres, and stadiums? Do you want your creation to make people happy for tens and hundreds of years to come? Then, the SUSU Institute of Architecture and Construction headed by the Candidate of Sciences (Engineering), Associate Professor Dmitrii Ulrikh, is the right choice for you.

SUSU Institute of Architecture and Construction: History and Modern Times

On September 1, 1952, the Civil Engineering Faculty appeared at the Chelyabinsk Polytechnic Institute (currently, South Ural State University). Time passed, new specialties and fields of education were introduced, the Faculty became the Faculty of Architecture and Construction, and moreover, the Faculty of Architecture was founded. A few years ago, in the course of the university reorganization, the Institute of Architecture and Construction was established on their basis and brought the scientific and educational activities to a whole new level.

At present, the structure of the Institute of Architecture and Construction includes the following departments: Department of Town Planning, Engineering Networks and Systems; Department of Engineering and Computer Graphics; Department of Building Materials and Products; Department of Building and Engineering Structures; Department of Building Technologies and Structural Engineering; as well as the Faculty of Architecture, which includes two departments: Department of Architecture and Department of Design and Visual Arts. Moreover, the Institute unites Educational Scientific Centre Construction, Educational Centre Modern Technologies of Building Materials, CAD in Construction Education Centre, and CAD for Building Structures Teaching Laboratory. The Youth Design Bureau has been opened recently. It is planned to open a BIM Centre. BIM is Building Information Modelling, an information model of a building or a structure, which includes architectural, technical, technological information, as well as the processes related to the operation and dispatch of an object. Related-fields experts can simultaneously work with such a model, what helps to identify and fix problems very quickly.

SUSU Institute of Architecture and Construction: Advantages for Applicants

The Institute of Architecture and Construction of South Ural State University trains professionals in one of the most popular specialties. In addition, the Institute implements elite training and project-based learning programmes. For example, in the framework of the “Construction” field of education, a new “elite” profile (specialization) in “Building Construction and Engineering Systems Design” (Bachelor’s degree programme, four-year study period) was opened at the Department of Town Planning, Engineering Networks and Systems. Project-based learning at the departments of the Institute is being implemented since the 2018/2019 academic year. The main topics of the projects are: “Studying the Durability of Concrete in Reinforced Concrete Structures in Case of Cyclic Impacts” (Department of Building Materials and Products); "Scaffolding Platform for Stone-masons in Frame House Building" (Department of Building Technologies and Structural Engineering); "Complex Development of the Household Infrastructure Systems of Municipalities" (Department of Town Planning, Engineering Networks and Systems).

Students of the Faculty of Architecture promote project-based learning in a number of the SUSU structural divisions: for example, designers help the Department of the Russian Language and Literature create a Virtual Museum of South Ural Writers and obtain a grant for its development. In collaboration with the Department of Processes and Pressure Metal Processing Machines in the 3D Prototyping Laboratory, design support for the FabLab project is carried out, and in the laboratory of the Department of Aircrafts the design of the advertising and information complex of the SUSU team for the Formula Student competitions and the general style design of the website of the Faculty of Aerospace Engineering are elaborated. In 2020, designers created an advertising-graphic complex and a corporate website for the SUSU Polytechnic Institute. For the America musical band, an advertising complex and an animation clip were made.

The departments of the Institute have modern computers and special equipment. Active students participate in professional exhibitions, publish their works in scientific journals.

Science of the SUSU Institute of Architecture and Construction Today

The research at the Institute is carried out in many fields: “Development and research of the properties of composite materials (including hybrid), the creation of a new generation of building structures”; “Development of energy-saving technologies and automatic heating and ventilation systems of buildings, in particular, development of weather schedules for regulating the heat supply process, taking into account both the real heat-shielding properties of buildings and the real characteristics of their heating systems”; “Development of resource-saving technologies for water consumption”; “Research and optimization of hydraulic modes of heat transfer systems, in particular, low-temperature heat supply systems”; “Conducting an energy audit in heat supply, gas supply, heating, ventilation and air conditioning systems, developing energy-saving measures for these systems, with an assessment of their energy efficiency”; “Landscape-ecological development of the urban environment, improvement of urban areas”; “Research of high-durability concretes technology for various fields of application; magnesia binders and materials based on them”; “Development in the field of production of heat-resistant and refractory materials from man-made products, selection of compositions and technology of heat-resistant and refractory materials; experimental and theoretical studies of the strength of light steel structures"; “Preservation and restoration of the green fund, the creation of the ecological and urban planning structure of million-plus cities and small towns in the Ural region”; "Communicative and architectural environment design"; “Energy and resource-saving technologies in urban planning of modern cities; urban planning interconnection of agglomerations using the world practices”; “Design and decorative art in the architectural environment, eco-design in the architectural environment of a city”; “Development of technologies for winter concreting”; “Energy efficiency of buildings, monitoring and evaluation of the quality of construction”; "Technology for the manufacture of steel fibre concrete"; "Ensuring the sustainability of buildings in the process of construction"; “Dynamic analysis of structures with physical and structural nonlinearity”; "Research in the field of environmental architecture and urban ecology"; "Phytotechnology in wastewater treatment"; "Reclamation of technologically disturbed territories".

Viable Projects

The SUSU Institute of Architecture and Construction is a participant of the projects of federal and international programs. The scientists of the Institute have the developments of manufacturing and assembly technologies for metal structures of the dome of the Cathedral of Christ the Saviour and the roof of the Luzhniki Stadium in Moscow; the award-winning (by the Government of the Russian Federation) design project for a new generation of chimneys and flues made of fibreglass for construction engineering and utilities; development of compositions and technologies for the use of high-strength concrete for monolithic housing construction. The researchers of the Institute have solved the problem of creating effective large-size corrosion-resistant structures made of laminated plastics for industry, developed the technology using which the Uralskaya Molniya Ice Rink in Chelyabinsk was erected; made the calculations for the foundations of the 27-storey Chelyabinsk CITY building; thanks to their efforts, the SUSU Main Building has acquired its originally devised appearance, adorned with a tower with a spire of the total height of 86 meters.

The Institute of Architecture and Construction has submitted an application for the 2020 contest “Research by Scientific Groups Led by Young Scientists” of the Presidential Programme for research projects implemented by leading scientists, including young scientists. The topic is “Dolomite-based Waterproof Binders”.

The SUSU Institute of Architecture and Construction participated in the Exhibition-Competition of the Best Designers “Excellent!” in Sochi in 2019, and in Moscow in 2020.

Students of the Institute are annually awarded certificates at the international competition for final qualification works in Architecture and Design of the Interregional Public Organisation for the Promotion of Architectural Education in Moscow.

The Institute participates in the International Youth Architecture and Art Festival Golden ArchIdea in Tyumen every year.

Students of the Institute become participants and laureates of all-Russian and international competitions of final qualification works in Construction, Architecture and Design.

International Cooperation

At present, the SUSU Institute of Architecture and Construction has a rather broad geography of international cooperation. Among the Institute’s partner universities there are Texas A&M University at Qatar, University of Wisconsin-Milwaukee, Imam Abdulrahman Bin Faisal University, which interact with the Institute as part of the “Development of Self-healing Concrete; Materials Based on Serpentine Phosphate Systems" programme.
