International SUSU Students Learn about Russian Folk Traditions

On February 6th the international SUSU students went snow tubing to Lazurnyi village. The Center for Sociocultural Adaptation of the Institute of Linguistics and International Communication organized this event to let the newly arrived students get a chance to experience all the charms of the Russian winter, and we know that downhill sledging is part of the Russian culture.

Though it was a bit cold that day, everyone was really excited while snow tubing. Some of the students confessed that they had never been in a cold-climate country before, so their first winter in Chelyabinsk already became a cultural shock to them. For instance, the lowest winter temperature in Venezuela is 20 Celsius above zero, that is why our 15 Celsius below zero felt like real cold to some of the foreigners.

Students from many different countries come to South Ural State University every year: India, China, Syria, Egypt, Morocco, Congo, USA, Venezuela, etc. For several years now the Center for Sociocultural Adaptation of the Institute of Linguistics and International Communication has been helping foreign citizens to adapt to new life conditions in Russia and learn about Russian traditions. Besides snow tubing the Center plans in the nearest future to organize a trip to “Sunny Valley” ski resort, “Akvilon” husky center, and “Gardarika” historic re-enactment park for the Maslenitsa festival.
