Each year, translators, interpreters and terminologists celebrate International Translation Day on 30 September. The International Federation of Translators chooses a unifying theme of the holiday. This year it is “Finding the words for a world in crisis”. The theme is used to promote the day and join together in celebrating the professions.
International Translation Day is meant as an opportunity to pay tribute to the work of language professionals, which plays an important role in bringing nations together, facilitating dialogue, understanding and cooperation, contributing to development and strengthening world peace and security.
Transposition of a literary or scientific work, including technical work, from one language into another language, professional translation, including translation proper, interpretation and terminology, is indispensable to preserving clarity, a positive climate and productiveness in international public discourse and interpersonal communication.
There is growing awareness that languages play a vital role in development, in ensuring cultural diversity and intercultural dialogue, but also in attaining quality education for all and strengthening cooperation, in building inclusive knowledge societies and preserving cultural heritage, and in mobilizing political will for applying the benefits of science and technology to sustainable development.
Thus, on 24 May 2017, the General Assembly declared 30 September as International Translation Day. The chosen day is the date of death of St. Jerome, the Bible translator who is considered the patron saint of translators. St Jerome was the first person to translate the Bible into Latin from the original Hebrew, making it accessible to a far wider audience.
Every year this day the United Nations and many different educational organisations invite staff and students to compete in contests rewarding the best translations from Arabic, Chinese, English, French, Russian, Spanish, German and many other languages. The event is also marked with a series of dedicated events, seminars and symposiums across the world.
Languages, with their complex implications for identity, communication, social integration, education and development, are of strategic importance for people and the planet.
An essential factor in harmonious communication among peoples, multilingualism is also regarded by the United Nations General Assembly as a core value of the Organization. By promoting tolerance, multilingualism ensures effective and increased participation of all in the Organization’s work, as well as greater effectiveness, better performance and improved transparency.
At SUSU Institute of Linguistics and International Communications trains specialists in the fields of linguistics and translation, theory and methods of teaching foreign languages, applied linguistics and philology, foreign regional studies and international relations using advanced educational technologies. Every year many students not only from Russian cities but from other countries enter the institute to get their degree.
One of them, Alisherzhon Mamadaliev, came from Uzbekistan to become a translator and get a competitive advantage for his future. He agreed to share his impression about studying at SUSU and his future profession.

I am sure we will always have much work to do as nowadays countries are trying to communicate and find common language. I congratulate all translators, present and future, with our professional holiday and wish us luck, inspiration and reaching the top of creativity.“
