A Hardware and Software Complex for Controlling Hydraulic Servo Drive Is Being Created at SUSU

SUSU scientists are engaged in the development and creation of the production of hydraulic servo drives with hydrostatic guideway. With the support from the Government of the Chelyabinsk Region, a team of scientists is developing modern Russian software for controlling a hydraulic servo drive using a personal computer. In October 2023, the project team submitted two applications for registration of computer programs.

The aim of the joint project by SUSU and OOO Ural Engineering Centre, implemented within the framework of the World-class Ural Interregional Research and Education Centre (UIREC), is to provide complete import substitution of the servo hydraulic drive design, including all components and software, by 2025. The production of hydraulic servo drives will be launched at the site of an industrial partner in the city of Chelyabinsk.

Servo hydraulic drive is used in bench testing equipment for conducting vibration tests of various products with high frequencies and forces, including aircraft, engine, rocket, military equipment, automotive, and building structures of various purposes. The design includes three main components: a hydraulic cylinder with hydrostatic guideway, a piston-rod position sensor and an electro-hydraulic power amplifier. Until 2021, such designs and all their components were imported from abroad.

The project on developing a software and hardware complex for controlling, configuring and diagnosing a servo hydraulic drive has been supported by the Government of the Chelyabinsk Region and is being implemented simultaneously with the project on developing an electro-hydraulic power amplifier and position sensor.

“In 2019-2021, Ural Engineering Centre jointly with SUSU, as part of the implementation of a major project in accordance with the Decree of the Government of the Russian Federation No. 218, created an import-substituting design and launched high-tech production of hydraulic cylinders with hydrostatic guideway. A machine-building workshop for the production of these hydraulic cylinders, which have no analogues in Russian mechanical engineering industry, is already functioning. At the end of 2021, design optimization of hydraulic cylinders was conducted at the expense of the grant from UIREC. In the first half of 2022, a set of design and technological documentation for the new hydraulic cylinders was developed and a prototype was produced,” says head of the project Dmitriy Ardashev, Professor of the Department of Automated Manufacturing Engineering of the SUSU Institute of Engineering and Technology.

The development of software and hardware complex is conducted jointly with the Department of Electronic Computing Machines of the SUSU School of Electronic Engineering and Computer Science. The team is currently developing an interface and architecture of the future system. Independent program blocks for data exchange with the microcontroller have already been written. These two programs will be registered in the near future, as applications for certificates of registration of computer programs have been submitted.

Production of Russian hydraulic servo drive is planned to begin in 2026. Import substitution of this device will ensure our country’s technological sovereignty in the development and creation of unique stands for testing products of strategic sectors of Russian industry.

Ural Advanced Production Technologies Research and Education Centre was created within the framework of the Science and Universities national project to conduct world-class applied scientific research and development. The centre is involved in obtaining competitive technologies and products, their commercialization, as well as in personnel training. Leading universities from the Sverdlovsk, Chelyabinsk and Kurgan regions, such as UrFU, SUSU, KSU and others, actively participate in the development of the UIREC.
