Day of Dictionaries and Encyclopaedias Held at SUSU

The Day of Dictionaries and Encyclopaedias has been recently celebrated in Russia. This holiday was established at the initiative of the Russian Language Arts Society in 2010, on the birth day of Vladimir Dal, a prominent lexicographer, ethnographer, Russian folklorist and author of the Explanatory Dictionary of the Living Great Russian Language.

Representatives of the Centre of Open Education in the Russian Language named after A.S. Pushkin N.N. KoshkarovaM.R. Bogush, teaching staff members of the Department of Russian as a Foreign Language I.A. Chunosova and M.V. Baranchuk, as well as SUSU students Omid Nazari (Iran) and Jin Yuhui (China) have held a Dictionary Day at the State Budgetary Professional Educational Institution Chelyabinsk Pedagogical College No. 2.

The event aimed at introducing students to lexicography (as a science on compiling dictionaries) and developing their cultural and linguistic worldview. The attendees of the Dictionary Day learned more about the Dal’s dictionary, took part in contests, in which the College students could show their proficiency in the Russian language, covering the whole diversity of its forms. Student from Iran Omid Nazari recited a verse in Persian by an Iranian poet and actor Hossein Panahi, and student from China Jin Yuhui – a poem by A.S. Pushkin. Among special guests were the Head of Electronic Resources Department of the Scientific Library of the Chelyabinsk Region M.V. Grigora and the Department’s staff member O.A. Shchukina, who talked about the Library’s subscription editions collection.

The winners were announced, and all the participants of the Dictionary Day were awarded certificates and souvenirs. We would like to thank Director of Chelyabinsk Pedagogical College No. 2 E.M. Zaiko and the Head of the Centre of Open Education in the Russian Language named after A.S. Pushkin I.V. Novichkova for their assistance in the organizing and holding of the Dictionary Day. We feel confident that such events are necessary for the preservation of the national self-identity, development of the skills of intercultural and interethnic communication, and cultivation of the love to the Russian language.
